Across 2026 the weekly average for petrol came to €1.810 and for diesel to €1.883, measured on 39 Monday readings. The year's closing petrol price was 24.9 cent higher than the opening one. The change from 2025 amounts to +7.4 cent for petrol and +17.6 cent for diesel, comparing annual averages.
For diesel the high was €2.178 on 30 Mar and the low €1.689 on 13 Jul; petrol ran from €1.712 to €1.972. Averaged across the year, diesel worked out 7.2 cent a litre dearer than petrol. About 50.8% of the average petrol price that year went in tax, near enough 92.0 cent per litre. Off-road diesel averaged €1.289 in the year, its weekly readings spanning €0.937 to €1.610.
September was the most expensive month for petrol, averaging €1.916; January was the cheapest, at €1.723.
Week on week, petrol rose 24 times, fell 13 times and held 2 times.
Europe-wide, petrol averaged €1.831 in 2026; Ireland sat 2.0 cent lower relative to that.
The duty schedule changed twice in 2026, per Revenue: on 25 Mar the rates became €584.18 (petrol) and €453.15 (diesel) per 1,000 litres; 15 Apr: petrol to €502.88, diesel to €371.85 per thousand litres.
The year of the protests. Excise was cut on 25 March and again on 15 April; the NORA levy fell to a tenth of a cent on 1 April; convoys blocked the M50 and fuel depots from 7 April, and on 13 April about 650 of some 1,500 stations were without fuel, according to contemporary reports. In August the Government kept the cuts until 31 October and set a restoration path to February 2027.
The CSO's own average for petrol began the year at €1.734 and stood at €1.869 in August.
