Why a weekly figure
The Republic has no public register of prices by station, and no official daily average. The most frequent official measurement is the European Commission’s Weekly Oil Bulletin, in which each member state reports the average pump price on Monday. That is the headline figure on every page, and every page states the Monday it refers to.
How a litre is broken down
For each Monday the site takes the bulletin’s tax-inclusive price and applies the rates in force that day: VAT is the price multiplied by the VAT rate over one plus the rate; the Mineral Oil Tax comes from Revenue’s tables in its non-carbon and carbon parts; the NORA levy from the Government’s decisions. What remains is the fuel, freight and retail margin. On 28 Sep 2026 the remainder for petrol was €1.099, and the Commission’s own tax-free figure was €1.099; when the two differ, the Commission has usually applied a rate that has since changed.
North and South
Northern prices are the Consumer Council’s town averages in pence, converted to euro at the ECB reference rate of the latest working day. The two surveys are taken on different days of the week, which every comparison states.
Stations
Stations are filling stations tagged on OpenStreetMap inside each county boundary, excluding those marked private or disused. Counts per 10,000 residents use the 2022 census. OpenStreetMap is edited by volunteers, so a few sites may be missing or out of date; the brand shown is the brand tag. The list used by the near-me finder, /api/stations.json, is a derived database published under the ODbL.
Scheduled changes
Every future change carries a status. Announced means a Government decision has been published; legislated means it is in Revenue’s rates as currently legislated; on the 2020 path means it follows the carbon tax trajectory but needs a Budget decision; pending means it depends on Budget 2027. Pump effects are quoted with VAT, as the Government announces them; carbon effects are estimates from Revenue’s rate per litre.
Updates and corrections
The site rebuilds itself when a source publishes: the bulletin is checked several times a week, the North every Thursday and Friday, the CSO monthly. Each page carries the date of its data. Errors can be reported through the contact on the about page; corrections are made in the data, not by hand in a page.
