Three surveys, three numbers

Three official or long-running surveys measure Irish pump prices, and they rarely agree to the cent. The Commission's bulletin records Monday prices every week; the CSO collects a national average each month for its price index; the AA publishes a monthly survey on the second Monday. Differences of a few cent usually come from timing rather than method.

Questions on petrol prices

What does a litre of petrol cost in Ireland this week?

The European Commission's survey for Monday 28 September 2026 puts the national average at €1.972 a litre for petrol and €2.123 for diesel, all taxes included.

How much of the petrol price is tax?

87.3 cent of the €1.972 litre, or 44.3%: non-carbon excise of 33.86 cent, carbon tax of 16.43 cent, the NORA levy of 0.1 cent and VAT of 36.9 cent.

When will petrol and diesel prices rise again?

The Government's timetable restores the excise cuts in four steps from 1 November 2026 to 28 February 2027: 27.3 cent on petrol and 32.3 cent on diesel in total, including the NORA levy. Budget 2027 on Tuesday 6 October 2026 can still change that.

Why do websites show different average petrol prices?

They use different surveys and dates: the Commission records Monday prices every week, the CSO averages its collections over a month and the AA surveys once a month. In a rising market a monthly figure lags behind a weekly one.
