A litre of road diesel cost €2.123 on average on Monday 28 September 2026, against €1.972 for petrol. The gap of 15.1 cent between the two is mostly a wholesale story: before tax, diesel costs 135.3 cent a litre to put in the tank, petrol 109.9 cent.

The diesel average has risen for eleven consecutive weeks. Compared with Monday 29 September 2025, a 50-litre fill of diesel has moved by +€23.08; compared with four weeks ago the litre is +19.2c.

The highest weekly average in the Commission's Irish series is €2.178 on 30 Mar 2026. The current figure is 5.5 cent from that mark.

Road transport operators recover some diesel excise through the Diesel Rebate Scheme, kept in its enhanced form until 31 December 2026 under the August decision. The bulletin measures the pump price before any such refund. Green diesel, the marked version for farm and off-road use, is priced separately on marked gas oil prices.
