52 weekly observations make up the record for 2023, with petrol averaging €1.678 and diesel €1.660. From the first Monday to the last, petrol finished 14.0 cent higher. Against 2022, the yearly petrol average moved −17.3 cent and the diesel average −23.3 cent.

The year's dearest petrol was €1.857 on 9 Oct and the cheapest €1.553 on 9 Jan, a spread of 30.4 cent. In annual terms, diesel stood 1.8 cent a litre cheaper than petrol. Excise, carbon tax where it applied, NORA and VAT came to 51.7% of the average petrol price in 2023, about 86.7 cent. For farm and heating users, green diesel came to €1.025 on average, moving between €0.859 and €1.175.

Averaged month by month, petrol topped out in October at €1.850; the floor came in January at €1.574.

Petrol's weekly record shows 27 upward moves, 25 downward ones and 0 weeks without change.

Ireland's petrol average ran 6.4 cent lower against the 2023 EU mean of €1.742.

Mineral Oil Tax on road fuel was revised three times in 2023: with effect from 1 Jun, €532.12 a kilolitre of petrol and €466.10 of diesel; a new schedule on 1 Sep set petrol at €589.03 and diesel at €506.75 per 1,000 litres; from 11 Oct, €606.39 on petrol and €526.83 on diesel per 1,000 litres.

The 2022 cuts were unwound in stages: Revenue raised the non-carbon excise on 1 June and 1 September 2023, and the carbon tax on road fuel reached €56 a tonne on 11 October.

The CSO recorded petrol at €1.594 in January and €1.709 in December, on its monthly national average.
