Marked gas oil, the green diesel used in tractors, plant and many oil boilers, averaged €1.569 a litre on Monday 28 September 2026 in the Commission's series for Ireland. It carries 13.5% VAT rather than 23%, and since 15 April 2026 its non-carbon excise has been zero, leaving only the carbon tax of 17.2 cent a litre.
Two of the scheduled excise steps touch marked gas oil: 2.7 cent on 1 November and another 2.7 cent on 31 January, VAT included. The carbon tax on heating fuels, held at €63.50 a tonne since May 2025, is legislated to move to €71 on 14 October, which Revenue's rate per litre turns into roughly 2.3 cent at the pump.
The Commission's weekly figure is a national average for deliveries and forecourt sales; quotes for a bulk fill to a farmyard vary with the volume and the distributor. The series is still the only weekly public record of the price, and it goes back to 2005.
Kerosene, the fuel most Irish oil boilers burn, is not in the Commission’s Irish series; its delivered price is tracked on home heating oil prices in Ireland, a sister site.

Green diesel questions
What is green diesel?
Marked gas oil: diesel dyed green and taxed at a reduced rate for use in agriculture, construction plant, boats and heating. Using it in a road vehicle is an offence.
Why is green diesel cheaper than road diesel?
Its non-carbon excise is currently zero, its carbon tax is charged at €63.50 a tonne rather than €71, and it pays 13.5% VAT instead of 23%. On Monday 28 September 2026 that left 36.0 cent of tax in a €1.569 litre.
Will green diesel go up in November?
The announced timetable adds 2.7 cent on 1 November and 2.7 cent on 31 January, VAT included; the carbon step on 14 October would add about 2.3 cent if Budget 2027 does not defer it.
