Petrol and diesel prices, 2021A steady climb to November's high.

The ledger for 2021: 49 Mondays, a petrol average of €1.515, a diesel average of €1.414. Petrol's December reading came in 39.8 cent higher than January's. The averages for 2020 make a useful yardstick: petrol is +22.4 cent against them, diesel +21.5 cent.

Petrol's weekly readings spanned €1.301 to €1.731 in 2021; the high fell on 22 Nov, the low on 11 Jan. Comparing the two averages, diesel was 10.1 cent a litre cheaper than petrol. Roughly 92.7 cent of each petrol litre in 2021 was tax, an average share of 61.2%. Green diesel, recorded in the same bulletin as heating gas oil, averaged €0.709 and ranged from €0.564 to €0.851.

The monthly averages for petrol peaked in November (€1.717) and bottomed out in January (€1.312), a spread of 40.5 cent.

The weekly petrol readings split 36 rises against 11 falls, with 2 weeks unchanged.

With the Union as a whole averaging €1.504 for petrol in 2021, Ireland came out 1.1 cent higher.

Revenue's rate table shows once in 2021: on 13 Oct the rates became €636.71 (petrol) and €535.46 (diesel) per 1,000 litres.

VAT returned to 23% on 1 March 2021; on 13 October the carbon tax on road fuel reached €41 a tonne.

The CSO's monthly average for petrol ran from €1.314 in January to €1.690 in December.
