Fuel prices in Ireland in 2019Carbon tax moves again after eight years.

Taken week by week, 2019 put the average litre of petrol at €1.403 and the average litre of diesel at €1.321. Opening and closing readings for petrol differ by 8.2 cent, the later one higher. Compared with the year before, the averages shifted −3.5 cent on petrol and −2.0 cent on diesel.

Diesel touched €1.352 on 27 May and fell as low as €1.259 on 21 Jan, while petrol stayed between €1.319 and €1.447. On the yearly means, diesel came out 8.2 cent a litre cheaper than petrol. Tax, at the rates in force each week, accounted for 62.2% of the average petrol price over the year, about 87.3 cent a litre. The rebated fuel used on farms averaged €0.716, with a low of €0.669 and a high of €0.751.

Of the twelve months, June carried the highest petrol average (€1.443) and January the lowest (€1.331).

The petrol price went up in 21 weeks and down in 21; in 7 it did not move.

The Commission's EU-wide petrol average for the year was €1.414, putting Irish petrol 1.1 cent lower on it.

Duty did not stand still in 2019; Revenue's table records once: a new schedule on 9 Oct set petrol at €601.69 and diesel at €494.90 per 1,000 litres.

On 9 October 2019 the carbon tax on petrol and diesel rose to €26 a tonne, the first step since 2011.

The CSO's own average for petrol began the year at €1.339 and stood at €1.448 in December.
